Hetman Polubotok (Poloubotok)

Pavlo Polubotok (c. 1660-1724), acting hetman of Left-Bank Ukraine from 1722, arrested by Peter I in 1723 and dead on 29 December 1724 in the Peter and Paul Fortress (Wikipedia, «Pavlo Polubotok»; Encyclopedia of Ukraine, «Polubotok, Pavlo»).

Marie claims descent from him through her mother's line: «sa grand-mère était petite-fille du grand hetman Poloubotok, dont le fils a fui en Hollande ... où il déposa des millions dont nous sommes les héritiers» (023.0648, 11 Sept 1874). The story of the hetman's gold deposited abroad (in the Bank of England in the best-known version, published by A. Rubets in Novoe Vremya in 1907) is a legend (Wikipedia, «Gold of Polubotok»); Marie's entry shows that the family told a Holland version decades earlier.
