Born in Nice (then Nizza, part of the Kingdom of Sardinia) in 1807. Relevance to Marie
On 6 January 1877, back in Nice after a week in Rome, Marie reads «les mémoires de Garibaldi et encore un autre livre où il en est question» and is «électrisée»; the reading sharpens her sense of her own insignificance: «Et moi je ne suis rien» (068.0440-0307). The same week she is moved by the royalist slogan in Piazza Barberini and the figure of Victor Emmanuel marching on Rome (068.0380-0250).References in Diary
