Overview
The baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure (carnet 068)
In Nice in January-February 1877 Marie hears Jean-Baptiste Faure (1830-1914), the most celebrated French baritone of the period, star of the Paris Opéra and famous for his Méphistophélès in Gounod's Faust. Kernberger (2013) identifies the singer of these entries as "presumably Jean-Baptiste Faure". Marie hears him in Donizetti's La Favorite on 27 January 1877 («sa voix semble une voix morte», 068.0853) and in Faust on 2 February 1877, when she is «émerveillée, charmée, en adoration devant le jeu, le chant et la figure de Faure ... c'était Satan lui-même» (068.0925) and would give her pearl necklace («fausses») to whoever brought him to her (068.0933).Whether the 1879 and 1882 references tagged with this entry are to the same Faure has not been checked.
