Show in diary 3 mentions Overview
The country estate of Marie's uncle Étienne (Stepan) Babanine and his wife in Little Russia, where Marie, her father and her brother Paul stay from 14 to 20 August 1876 before going on to Poltava and Gavronzi. Marie spells it «Chpatowoka» (064.0568) and «Chpatowska» (064.0603, 073.0391); the Mon Journal t.8 index and carnet 065 have «Chpatovska». Kernberger (2013, glossary): «Chpatovska: estate of Marie's Uncle Stepa in Ukraine».Relevance to Marie
- 14 August 1876: met at «la station Grousskoë» by two carriages, six peasant servants and Paul; «Une heure et demie de voiture jusqu'à Chpatowoka» (064.0568).
- «Dans la bienheureuse Chpatowska on ne fait que manger» (064.0603); the neighbours of those days are the Hamsley brothers, Paul Yssayevitch and his sister Dina, and the Tarnowskys (064.0599–0622, 065/1876-08-17…20).
- 11 August 1877, in her catalogue of admirers: «Et Michel Hamsley ? à Chpatowska» (073.0391).
Identity uncertain
We have not found where the estate lay. Neither «Chpatovka» (in Russian or Ukrainian spellings) nor a station «Grousskoë» (Gruzskoye) on the railways from Moscow to Kharkov and Poltava could be traced in the sources we searched; Marie's telegram of 16 August announces «Dimanche nous serons à Poltava» (064/1876-08-16), and the family left for Poltava on 20 August (065/1876-08-20). If you know the place, we would be glad to hear from you.References in Diary
