Overview

«Le vieux baron Callotti, sénateur», whom Marie meets at the Fabbricatore ball in Naples on 18 April 1877 (070.0694). The Mon Journal t.10 index has «Callotti (baron), 123, 126». Probably Baron Giuseppe Gallotti, born in Naples in 1803 of an old noble family, deputy and questore of the Neapolitan Chamber in 1848, later a senator of the Kingdom of Italy (it.wikisource, «Il Parlamento del Regno d'Italia/Giuseppe Gallotti»); confidence 0.7, since the edition spells the name with a C and no other senator of a similar name was checked.

Relevance to Marie

Marie talks with him at the ball and finds him, with Carmignano and the pianist Cesi, «une vraie consolation» (070.0694). That evening a Mme Lieto loses a diamond earring (070.0700). The next day, when Marie mentions the lost earring, her visitors ask whether Callotti was there and explain «que Callotti était connu gettattore qu'il a eu je ne sais combien de duels à ce propos» (070.0729–0730): he had the reputation of bringing bad luck by the evil eye. No source was found for that reputation.
