I am saddened by it this morning, ready to weep — but all of it in the vague...!
But last night I received a letter from Le Figaro. Yes — from Le Figaro, from M. Périvier, asking to visit my studio with a view to the composition of the Figaro illustré that appears at the end of the year, at Christmas.
If one of my paintings could suit the purpose, that would be very fine.
In any case, the visit itself is already something good.
At Bastien's around six o'clock.
This creature eats — and what abominable, horrible things he eats. Sausage!!
[Crossed out: And along with that] He is not even interesting sitting in his armchair, dressed and eating these abominations. Then they put him to bed [Words blacked out]. He is only bearable lying down — I am used to him that way. He is very kind to me and [Words blacked out: he pressed] my hand with an intention of friendship that ought to enchant me and that astonished me.
But none of that interests me any longer. I do not believe he is gravely ill — people are mistaken. He will live. But it is I who no longer knows where I stand — in anything.
And painting!!
Once up and dressed — but he will be a very ugly little fellow. If only I could hear everything he says... Oh! no — do you see that, that!!
That is what makes
He has perhaps pressed my aunt's hand, Dina's, in the same way — it is possible. But it is the first time he has pressed mine like that. Poor child — he then wanted to show his strength and test ours; I hurt his fingers, which gave occasion for tender apologies while patting his hands.
I hear Julian asking how my tender apologies went.---
— Did I hurt you? No, poor child, really?
That is all — but it could be accompanied by coy looks and glances... without insipidity.
And if he is truly condemned. I do not believe it, and continue to lay siege — I, a limping soldier.
Jean-Jacques was.
And he was always unhappy too.
And Gambetta was one-eyed — but they were men!

Notes

Jean-Jacques Rousseau suffered from increasing deafness; Marie finds consolation in the example.
