I do a little work at home.
How is it that Wolff has said nothing about my painting? Is he an idiot, then? Or he has not seen it — that is still possible; going through Room 17 he may have been distracted. It is not that I am unworthy of that illustrious man's attention, since he concerns himself with people... of lesser standing than mine...
So? It is bad luck, like the number 3. I do not believe in bad luck where I am concerned — it would be too convenient, and one looks foolish; I believe in my own modest merit.
And the astonishing thing is that it is true.
