I have just re-read, by chance, a few pages of my life in 1880. And I find myself far happier now. It is quite remarkable — in comparison, and even without comparison, I have not a care in the world; I am at peace. And yet back then! I wept every day, I fretted... There was reason enough... Now I see it all from higher up, from very high indeed; our situation is
better; I no longer trouble myself to talk with my family — I extract from them what I can and let the little lies pass, for they know they no longer deceive me. Oh! yes, I am well now, and I give thanks to God for it.
