A good day — I have finished Louis's portrait. We went to Versailles, and in the evening, after the visit to the Marshal, Claire and I go to lie on the floor of the salon, as we do every evening.
Conversations about art, as always every evening — but tonight there is more genuine intimacy, and above all I am thinking about my painting; it will be… something full of poetry… Quiet, calm, simple, deep. The magnificent terms are not lacking… Well, we shall see… Claire will produce a landscape that I will compose.
They seem delighted with the pastel, and I believe they will be very pleased for me to add a few touches to one of Claire's paintings for the Salon… Besides, the girl is gifted — but for her very poor eyesight, she would paint beautifully.
My new painting would be large, simple… calm.
