Only two pastels were accepted with first-rank priority: mine and Breslau's.

Il n'y a eu deux pastels reçus avec n° 1. Le mien et celui de Breslau.

Breslau's painting is not on the cimaise. But her portrait of the Figaro administrator's daughter is.

Le tableau de Breslau n'est pas sur la cimaise. Mais son portrait de la fille de l'administrateur du "Figaro" est sur la cimaise.

My painting is not on the cimaise either — but Tony assures me it can be seen very well, and that the painting below it is not large. The head of Irma is on the cimaise and in a corner: place of honour, consequently. In short, he says I have a good hanging.

Mon tableau n'est pas sur la cimaise non plus, mais Tony assure qu'on le voit très bien et que le tableau qui est dessous n'est pas grand. La tète d'irma est sur la cimaise et dans un angle, par conséquent place d'honneur. Enfin il dit que j'ai une bonne exposition.

Only — since the painting is not on the cimaise — Machiavelli whispers a stratagem to me. I have just written to the excellent, naïve architect a letter in which I tell him that a machination is being plotted against me, the result of which would be a few disagreeable lines from Wolff about my hanging.

Seulement comme le tableau n'est pas sur la cimaise Machiavel me souffle un moyen. Je viens d'écrire à l'excellent, au naïf architecte une lettre ou je lui dis qu'il se trame contre moi une machination dont le résultat serait quelques lignes désobligeantes de Wolff sur mon exposition.

Wolff ne me connaît pas et n'aura pas de raison pour ne pas accueillir ces renseignements d'autant plus qu'ils lui seront fournis par un monsieur qui... Mais c'est trop long à expliquer. Enfin vous qui connaissez Wollf si vous pouviez parer ce coup bien monté etc. N'est-ce pas abominable d'avoir à lutter contre tant de malveillance avant même d'avoir du talent. Ça donne envie d'enrager le monde et je voudrais bien avoir du talent et des articles ! Ce n'est pas chrétien mais tant pis !

Nous verrons si ça servira à quelque chose. C'est écrit avec une mauvaise plume, il y a des pâtés, enfin j'ai l'air d'être en proie à une vive émotion.

As on almost every evening, there are guests to dinner — the Engelhardts, Dusautoy, or the Princess, or all together. I listen to them and tell myself: here are people who do nothing and spend their lives saying foolish things or gossiping. They are happier than I am… Their troubles are different and they suffer as much. But they do not enjoy everything as much as I do. A quantity of things escapes them — nothings, subtleties, reflections that are for me a field of observation and a source of pleasures unknown to the common sort. A passer-by, the expression in a child's or a woman's eyes, an advertisement, what do I know? — when I go to the Louvre, crossing the courtyard, mounting the staircase worn by the groove left by the millions of feet that have trodden it; opening that door, and the people one meets there — one invents stories for them, follows them into their inner life, imagines their existence; in an instant, then other thoughts, other impressions… All of it interconnects, and all of it is various. There is subject for… what do I know. And if since this great misfortune I am less than everyone, there are perhaps compensations…

Comme presque tous les soirs il y a du monde à dîner, les Engelhardt, Dusautoy, ou la princesse ou, tout ça ensemble. Je les écoute et me dis que voilà des gens qui ne font rien et qui passent leur vie à dire des niaiseries ou des potins. Ils sont plus heureux que moi... Leurs tracas sont autres et ils souffrent autant. Et ils ne jouissent pas autant que moi de tout. Une quantité de choses leur échappent, des riens, des subtilités, des reflets qui sont pour moi un champ d'observations et une source de plaisirs inconnus du vulgaire. Mais aussi je [Mots noircis: suis peut] être plus sujette que beaucoup à ces contemplations, des grandeurs de la nature autant que des mille détails de Paris. Un passant, une expression d'yeux d'enfants ou de femme, une annonce, que sais-je ? quand je vais au Louvre, traverser la cour, monter l'escalier par le sillon tracé par les millions de pieds qui l'ont foulé; ouvrir cette porte, et les gens que l'on y rencontre, on leur prête des histoires, on les suit dans leur être intime, on se représente leur vie; en un instant, puis d'autres pensées, d'autres impressions... Tout cela s'enchaîne et tout cela est divers. Il y a là sujet à ... Est-ce que je sais. Et si depuis ce grand malheur je suis moins que tout le monde, il y a peut-être des compensations...

Est-ce qu'on peut s'habituer à une telle misère ! Que cela arrive à un homme âgé, à une vieille femme, à un malheureux. Mais à un être jeune, vivant, vibrant, enragé de vie !!!
