M. Géry sends me a bouquet of roses. Yesterday we went to the Decorative Arts Exhibition with the Gavinis, then to the Bois — it is not at all warm this summer. Saint Amand is in the country. I have sat again and will continue until Thursday...
But really! What an idea that I might paint a beautiful picture!! When one does something fine, it comes after a series of things fairly good — but like this, all at once!
Because I shall have found some attitudes, a sketch... And because I want... In short... What can I say to you... It is better not to think of it... Only I am quite wrong to imagine that one can just... All the more so because... That is to say, all the less.
God help me. I wish I had not thought of it, and had counted on nothing; one only has happiness by surprise — one is always deceived when one expects it — but I expect nothing... It is only that it robs me of sleep. It could be so beautiful! I understand it so well! It would be so far superior to the woodcutters and potato-gatherers with which they persecute us in Bastien's honour.
And it is not academic — it is plein air, realism, in terms of execution; and in feeling it is neither convention nor melodrama, but human, but... Oh, if only I could. Oh, if only I could.
A former studio companion, Mrs Lyod, comes to see me; she is passing through and has done at Rome a painting of the Holy Women at the Sepulchre — but that has nothing to do with what I am planning; and besides, the thing has been done a thousand times. I told her I was doing the same subject in a different spirit, so that later she could not say she had given me the idea. And see the old method: she posed two models in her studio with a black crêpe over their heads; the background is made up, representing a black sky and the setting sun while the figures are in full light. Look: the same subject, and it says absolutely nothing — two models, one dark and one fair, that is all. She brought her husband and her brother; she is very nice, but as for talent, there is nothing, I believe.
