The picture! It is an obsession. If I were a little more sure of myself I would go to Jerusalem. But... And then there is the whole family to drag after me.
Ah, if only I were a man.
So — let us go to Algiers. Among the Jewish population I shall find what is needed, for in the matter of dress — if I say to myself, for instance, I will put a blue drapery with a brown gown, it will be false. One must find it on someone, an ensemble that will strike my eye and that I can buy as I did in Spain; chance, real life — those are the true colourists and the most pleasing harmonies. I shall also need a plank hut and a large tarpaulin like the travelling players, since my canvas will stay there the whole time for three months. Provided I am not ill. I should still like to go to Jerusalem... It is eight days instead of two months — what does that matter... But it will be ridiculous if I do not succeed...
