A deadly dull evening, and a dinner in the middle of which I very nearly fainted, suffocated by the flowers.
The guests: Mme Lepic, Janvier's sister; Janvier; the Comtesse de Reverseaux, Janvier's daughter; M. and Mme Jide; M. and Mme Randouin, who is Mme Jide's daughter. Another Jide. Two young men; and in the evening Mme de Marcilly, then Montgomery.
I should love to have the talent to paint these raffish Bonapartist relics. Mme Lepic has been with old de Dalmas for years. She does her hair in the style of 1855 or '52, and has a liveliness and a conduct that make her the worthy sister of young Janvier.
All of them are sixty — working out the sums, one arrives at figures...
There were a good seven or eight hundred years combined.
