Julian dined here yesterday and saw my canvases from Nice. It appears they are altogether dreadful, fit to be kicked through; that I am in the lowest depths, that he would sooner be seized with red-hot pincers than watch me produce such abominations. How can this be!!
I who showed such promise!!
Sketches thrown away that he has retrieved, [blackened words: stopping] everyone who comes to his house. Am I even capable of hearing hard truths?
Well, there it is! It is abominable to slap things together instead of observing — it is woman's work, I am nothing but a woman! It is only by thoroughly absorbing the idea that I am in the most abject of declines that I may perhaps escape it, for what I am producing is odious, and if one did not know my past, one would see in these canvases nothing, nothing, nothing!
"And note that I am going easy on you."
Well, I prefer it that way — it is all my anxieties, fears, and discontents reduced to their starkest expression.
I knew it, but I am more at peace now that it has been said aloud. I shall get out of this. And I would marry Julian off to Dina — though he thinks it is I who am charming. It amuses me: I do not converse with him, I perform, and sensing a good audience I am brilliant at childlike, whimsical tones and poses; wrapped in a white wool dress with harmonious folds — a Lefebvre figure, one of those supple young bodies he renders so well in chaste draperies.
Yes, I do not take the trouble to paint properly — I observed myself today, I cut corners. But I am going to be strict with myself.

Notes

Troisième dessous: literally "third below" — a theatrical term for the deepest level beneath the stage. Here used metaphorically for the most extreme artistic degradation.
Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911), professor at the Académie Julian, celebrated for his gracefully draped female figures.
