Sunday, 17 April 1881

The whole day as a family — Monsieur, Madame and myself. First to church, then to the Gavinis'; we take Mme Gavini with us. The weather is superb, the Bois delicious; I have a perfect hat that makes me positively pretty. At the Pré Catalan,1 all the elegant set: Mmes de Reverseaux, Thouvenel, de Joly, Janvier, etc. — and Montgomery with a tray of cups, playing the waiter.

Toute la journée en famille, M. Mme et moi. D'abord à l'église puis chez les Gavini, nous emmenons Mme avec nous. Il fait un temps superbe, le Bois est délicieux, j'ai un chapeau idéal, il me rend postivement jolie. Au Pré Catalan toute la bande élégante, Mmes de Reverseaux, Thouvenel, de Joly, Janvier etc., Montgomery avec un plateau de tasses qui fait le garçon.

Still no invitation to the Queen's. I dreamed of Cassagnac again — and of two small children; he was showing me his house and speaking warmly of his home.

Il n'y a tout de même pas d'invitations pour chez la Reine. J'ai encore rêvé de Cassagnac et de deux petits enfants, il me montrait sa maison et vantait son chez-soi.

Maman went to see Mme de Peyronney, who is apparently adorable.

Monday, 18 April 1881

The Tchoumakoffs and the Princess dine with us, and in the evening a costume ball at Mme de Lalande's — a friend of the Juvisys and of la Bailleul, whom the latter brought to us the other Saturday.

Les Tchoumakoff et la princesse dînent avec nous, et le soir bal costumé chez Mme de Lalande, une amie des Juvisy et de Bailleul que cette dernière nous a amenée l'autre samedi.

A ravishing, artistic apartment — but far too small. Everything was very good, magnificent costumes, but there was no dancing; people were crushed together, and impossible to see even the hem of a skirt or anyone's feet. And the heat!

Ravissant et artistique appartement mais beaucoup trop petit. Tout était très bien, des costumes magnifiques mais on ne dansait pas, on s'écrasait et pas moyen de voir ni le bas des jupes ni les pieds. Et une chaleur !

Many Russians — la Basilevitch, the Kanchines, Engelhardt, Plancy, Tanlay, a crowd of familiar faces.

Beaucoup de Russes, la Basilevitch, les Kanchine, Engelhardt, Plancy, Tanlay, un tas de figures de connaissances.

We go in a group — my father, Dina, myself, Alexis and Bojidar, la Bailleul, la Cerny, the Tchoumakoffs. Ravishing American women, and what seems to me a great many ageing adventuresses of society. Mme Cartwright, whom I knew through Sarah when she came to the studio one day, greets me and invites me to call on her; not knowing how to respond, I introduce Papa, who finds her very beautiful. Then the Comtesse de Trobillant — an old-style eccentric American who invites us to her home. La Bailleul knew almost everyone.

Nous y sommes en bande, mon père, Dina, moi, Alexis et Bojidar, Bailleul, la Cerny, les Tchoumakoff. Des Américaines ravissantes et il me semble beaucoup de vieilles cascadeuses du monde. Mme Cartwright que j'ai connue par Sarah un jour qu'elle est venue à l'atelier, me salue et m'invite à venir la voir, ne sachant comment répondre je lui présente papa qui la trouve très belle. Puis la comtesse de Trobillant une Américaine vieille types-se excentrique qui nous invite chez elle. La Bailleul connaissait presque tout le monde.

I do not enjoy myself — the same costume as at Dalmas's but it has lost its chic, it seems to me. We return at half past two. On the whole it was elegant, gay, amusing — but I think of the innocent Isabelle.2

Je ne me plais pas, le même costume que chez Dalmas mais il a perdu son chic à ce qu'il me semble. Nous rentrons à deux heures et demie. En somme c'était élégant, gai, drôle mais je pense à l'innocente Isabelle.

Tuesday, 19 April 1881

I lunched at the Gavinis'. Bojidar dines here. He is a very charming boy. Alexis thinks a little too much that he is a man and a handsome one — but Bojidar is kind, intelligent, well-bred, and thinks me much more than I am in reality. He is also a gossip, but that does not bother me.

J'ai déjeuné chez les Gavini. Bojidar dîne ici. C'est un bien charmant enfant. Alexis pense un peu trop qu'il est un homme et joli garçon mais Bojidar est gentil, intelligent, bien élevé et pense que je suis beaucoup plus que je ne suis en réalité. Il est aussi mauvaise langue mais ça m'est égal.
