Finished the competition. I wanted, to see, to pronounce in advance here, but I really cannot. I do not like what I have done; I had sand in my eyes, and it was dark the days when I painted my largest sections; I was in good spirits only today, so I repainted almost all the head, which is the better for it, but it is all the same — I do not like it. But I must admit that it is the best there is. Amelie's has much impact, having only a profile, and the model having an enormous Directoire hat with tulle ribbons; she had time to paint hat, clothing, background, and everything.

Fini le concours. Je voulais, pour voir, me prononcer d'avance ici, mais je ne puis vraiment. Je n'aime pas ce que j'ai fait, j'ai eu du sable aux yeux et il a fait noir les jours où j'ai peint mes plus grands morceaux, je n'ai été bien entrain qu'aujourd'hui aussi ai-je repeint presque tout la tête qui s'en trouve mieux, mais c'est égal je n'aime pas ça. Mais je dois avouer que c'est ce qu'il y a de mieux. Celle d'Amélie a beaucoup d'aspect n'ayant qu'un profil et le modèle ayant un énorme chapeau Directoire avec des brides de tulle, elle a eu le temps de peindre chapeau, habits, fonds et tout.

I, who have an almost full face, prepared everything and painted only the face. So Amelie has impact but it is invented, and badly drawn and not like the model — but that does not matter in the competition. Madeleine gave up; her drawing was very bad.

Moi, qui ai une face presque pleine, j'ai préparé tout et n'ai peint que la figure. Donc Amélie a de l'aspect mais c'est de chic, et mal dessiné et pas ressemblant mais ça ne fait rien au concours. Magdeleine a lâché, son dessin était fort mauvais.

There is Villevieille, who is not too bad, and a Swedish woman not too bad either, and three horrors. As for the studio at 51 rue Vivienne, it will be a pile of rubbish barring surprises. Amelie will perhaps get the medal, but by Jove I would not give it to her — she took a profile because she can never align two eyes, and this very profile is so sloppy in drawing! Not to mention a heap of invented tones.

Il y a Villevieille qui n'est pas trop mal et une Suédoise pas trop mal non plus et trois horreurs. Quant à l'atelier du 51 rue Vivienne, ce sera un monceau de saletés sauf surprise. Amélie l'aura peut-être la médaille mais sapristi je ne la lui donnerais pas, elle a pris un profil ne pouvant jamais mettre deux yeux d'accord et ce profil même est d'un lâché comme dessin ! Sans compter un tas de tons de chic.

But from a little distance it has impact — yet these good academicians should not let themselves be won over by that. I am not at all sure of having drawn as well as I can, and then, although I always judge myself more or less fairly, one has surprises sometimes.

Mais d'un peu loin cela a de l'aspect pourtant ces bons académiciens ne devraient pas se laisser vaincre par cela. Moi je ne suis pas sûre du tout d'avoir dessiné aussi bien que je peux et puis bien que je me juge toujours à peu près justement, on a des surprises quelquefois.

When I got the medal I thought I had made a horror... but one must not trust that... In short, I would very much like to have it; it would lift my morale, and then in short it will prove that I painted a head found good by Bouguereau, Lefebvre, Tony, and Boulanger.

Quand j'ai eu la médaille je pensais avoir fait une horreur... mais il ne faut pas se fier à ça... En somme je voudrais bien l'avoir ça me remonterait le moral et puis en somme cela prouvera que j'ai peint une tête trouvée bonne par Bouguereau, Lefèvre, Tony et Boulanger.

You know, they only give the medal when it is deserved; if there is nothing that deserves it, they rank the drawings and that is all.

Vous savez, on ne donne la médaille que quand on la mérite, s'il n'y a rien qui la mérite, on classe les dessins et voilà tout.
