Saturday, 16 October 1880

With all sorts of good things, Tony said, "on the whole, I am very satisfied, it is going very well" — thus ended the lesson. I am very happy; every Saturday I have fears! And then joys!...
It is because it is the only thing I take seriously.
My radiant model, whose name is [crossed out: is] Madame Gredelue, is willing to pose for a painting provided it is not too nude. I do not know what her circumstances are, but I suppose she does not work for a living since she comes to the studio and poses as much as I like for this portrait.
All the same, she is really very kind. She had promised me her hands and her arm in exchange for a portrait of her son's head, but a whole painting! You know, that is a matter of perhaps six weeks. She is fresh, young, radiant, with something touching and maternal about her expression. I shall give her a handsome present.
Berthe came, the Tchoumakoffs, the Juvisys.
