Meissner reminds me of the year 1875, and I find there the day I laughed the most in my whole life: Saturday, 22 May 1875. I have never laughed so much, neither before nor since. That lady on the terrace! Nothing equals the sixteenth year... And nothing equals our good follies with my two Graces; there is only one shadow, the vanity of Nice... but I have always had that, and in summer at Nice I felt it less than ever... What have I had since? You know.
