I return from the studio after four days' absence.

Je reviens de l'atelier après quatre jours d'absence.

I went to see Berthe (once every six months) thinking of that mirage of a Mention... an impossible thing and above all undeserved. Goodness, if one went into details, if one asked how long one has been working, what one promises, etc. — but ex abrupto... Amelie will have a medal; Leon Say has a long arm. But why does Berthe concern herself with me? There is no doubt some gentleman whose devotion must be tested and who promises to execute every caprice.

Je suis allée voir Berthe (une fois tous les six mois) en pensant à ce mirage de Mention... chose impossible et surtout imméritée. Dame si on entrait dans les détails, si l'on demandait depuis combien de temps on travaille, ce qu'on promet etc. mais ex abrupto... Amélie aura une médaille elle, Léon Say a le bras long. Mais pourquoi Berthe s'occupe t-elle de moi ? Il y a sans doute un monsieur dont il faut éprouver le dévouement et qui promet d'exécuter tous les caprices.

O justice! Right near my painting was a hideous thing, a woman in blue on a yellow ground — she seemed pasted against the paper. Well, this monstrosity is now placed in a gallery and on the line.

Ô justice ! Tout près de mon tableau se trouvait un affreux machin, une femme en bleu sur fond jaune; elle semblait collée contre le papier. Eh bien cette monstruosité est placée maintenant dans une salle et sur la cimaise.
