Soutzo came to bring me feathers.

This evening is mid-Lent; we go to the Opera ball: de Daillens, Dina, and I, in black, very well masked. But it was not gay. We told Rouzat that he was an old miser and a skinflint; we went to greet a good gentleman, calling him M. Grevy, M. le President, and a lady, believing us sincere, set about correcting us. But all this lacks spirit. Joseph was walking about with an elegant domino sufficiently masked for an actress and even for a woman of society. The powerful [Word blacked out: secretary] walked slowly, spoke softly, did not leave his lady, and spoke only to men as calm, as "comme il faut" as he. He was playing his role. Besides, it is the republican style; they all look or want to look like diplomats and affect a measure, manners, and expressions of refined politeness as much as the Bonapartists let themselves go.

Ce soir mi-carême, nous allons au bal de l'Opéra, de Daillens, Dina et moi en noir très masquées. Du reste c'est le genre républicain, ils ont tous l'air ou veulent avoir l'air de diplomates et affectent une mesure, des manières et des expressions de politesse raffinée autant que les bonapartistes se lâchent.

J'ai intrigué sans plaisir un avocat nommé Brizard, ami de Daillens.
