While running after the model Leonie, I have made the acquaintance of almost the entire honorable Beaudoin family. It is pure Zola, Zola of Nana; besides, that is the name I give Leonie. A mixture of naivety... astonishing. For the moment she does not pose: "I posed when I did not know what I was doing; it is not decent to pose. I am in a dress shop; it does not amuse me, mind you, but he wants it."

Tout en courant après le modèle Léonie, j'ai fait la connaisance de presque toute l'honorable famille Beaudoin. C'est du Zola pur, du Zola de Nana, du reste c'est ce nom là que je donne à Léonie. Une mélange de naïveté... étonnante. Pour le moment elle ne pose pas; je posais quand je ne savais pas ce que je faisais, ce n'est pas honnête de poser. Je suis dans un magasin de robes, cela ne m'amuse pas, allez mais il le veut.

But Gavini accompanies me to the Theatre Francais, where my family is and where Hernani is being given, the 50th anniversary of the play. I take Saint-Amand with us; we arrive for the fifth act. Sarah recites verses by Coppee. They acclaim the poet, Sarah, Hugo... it is very beautiful, but an insignificant audience.

Ce soir à l'Opéra avec M. Mme Gavini, Mme et Mlle Dureau (loge Haussmann, pareille à celle de Casa-Riera) Chaudordy, Lahirle, Saint Amand, Haussmann. Je commence à aimer Haussmann, je ferai son portrait pour le prochain salon. La salle est très belle ce soir, "toute la société est là". La reine d'Espagne nous lorgne. Mais Gavini m'accompagne au "Théâtre Français" où est ma famille et où l'on donne "Hernani" 50ème anniverssaire de la pièce, je prends Saint Amand avec nous, nous arrivons pour le 5ème acte. Sarah dit des vers de Coppée. On acclame le poète, Sarah, Hugo... c'est très beau mais public insignifiant.
