Mme Adam's ball is not masked but only costumed. Hence hesitations... then the invitations not being in our names. Finally everything is arranged. I am going. Maman went to the offices of the Nouvelle Revue, gave her card, and was sent an invitation. It is Worth who is making a costume, Directoire style. I tried it on this evening.
But that is not the important thing. I stop at the Gavinis', and while Madame goes to her dressing room, Monsieur takes me aside and in a truly grieved tone:
"My dear child, you know that I love you like a father; you know that I give you advice as I would to my daughter, that I want what is best for you, that I am your friend... Do not interrupt me. Well, I beg you, be reasonable! No more follies. Yesterday I met Arnaud and he said to me: 'The little Russian girl is well?' You know, she gave me a rendezvous at Murcie. She was on the arm of Prince Karageorgevitch; she was very elegant with large diamonds in her ears. It has been a long time since you have seen her; she is well?"
"I did not answer. But I implore you, be prudent."
"How you who are... what you are, and to give this imbecile reason to think things... that are not so. Etc., etc. You who aspire and who have the right to aspire to so many things, and it is of you that this little idiot dares to speak thus! But he will say it to everyone."
"And you who want and who ought to marry as you ought to marry, as you have the right to do, that is to say brilliantly, and it is you!" Etc., etc., etc.
In short, he advises me to act as if he did not exist, to concern myself with him no more, to look at him no more. Oh! If that could mend things...
The idiot! He, a man of wit, he, a man who knows how to live! And to say that I can do nothing!!! What an imbecile. Even supposing he were certain of having recognized me, does one go telling this to everyone!
It seems it is Hecht who, having suddenly become our enemy, is filling his head with ideas. It seems this Hecht has been spreading gossip about us at the de Lesseps'. No doubt to thank us for all our kindness. I rack my brain and cannot understand why this Jew has become my enemy! I do not suppose he had pretensions to me and that Motta repeated to him what Maman said, that is to say that a Russian woman would rather die than marry a Jew and that Jews cannot be considered as men.
Well! What do you expect! There are people for whom everything succeeds; they strike right, left, rightly and wrongly, and always strike true; others... whatever they do are always wrong and always clumsy.
In these conditions, tomorrow's ball presents itself as a complicated and worrying machine. I must be beautiful; I would like to be as beautiful as the other evening at our house... by the way, Gabriel is finished; I no longer dream of him. Finished in twenty-four hours. Fortunately he does not care...
But that beast Arnaud. A...rnaud, it was foreseen.
