Multedo has sent blackbirds from Corsica.
Rehearsal at my house while the blue drawing room and the large one are given over to my family, who are receiving.
Word of a party has spread, and people are being introduced, invitations requested for friends. I invited Krishaber and his wife... who came today, and it turns out she is an intimate friend of Nina who was mad about Yourkoff and jealous of Maman, while she herself, still Mme Baumgarten, was in love with Krishaber. One meets again. Mlle de Villevieille, then Mme and Mlle Dureau (a former prefect's wife from the Empire), and others I did not see; we were shut in rehearsing. Myself, Dina, Tarente, Soutzo, Courtes, and Gery. Berthe comes to disturb us, but what disturbed the most was Edmond, who arrived every minute bringing tea, chocolate, sandwiches, wine, etc. Tarente and Courtes, who are looking to marry rich foreign women, get on my nerves. But Gabriel's purity - one may laugh at it, and he may even be a rake like another, but he will always have [Crossed out: purity] and the honesty of heart and soul... and if not!... then he has the most frightfully deceptive appearance one could dream of. Two or three times already I have caught myself thinking, why is it not given to me to love such a man?
Come now, perhaps he is only an imbecile. Oh! No. It would be so good to rest on this purity, on this virtue that I mock and which inspires in me an admiration so calm, so restful; it is like a soft, harmonious voice coming from far away, fading.
I shall not please him; I laugh too much.
But even while laughing, when I speak to him it is differently than to others; there is a softer note, almost maternal.
Here are coolings-off for that little embassy attache! My heart is so empty that I need to believe some stupidity.
Monsieur Constantin Bashkirtseff sends Maman a hundred-word telegram about Paul's marriage, which annoys him, and he telegraphs me these words: "Be good, help me, telegraph your opinion on this marriage. Bashkirtseff." To which I replied: "Here is opinion you request. Paul's youth makes marriage insane but impossible decide without knowing young lady. In all cases mother's presence indispensable. Am writing letter. Marie."
Here is the letter: [missing]
