Sunday, 13 April 1879 — Easter

I finished sitting at eleven in the morning. The portrait is ugly and not a likeness. After that we lunch at the Karageorgevitches'. There are Mademoiselle Mavrocordato and her brother, Prince Soutzo, and Monsieur Koechlin — brother-in-law of Andrieux, the prefect of police. Gambetta was discussed and I declared myself for the government, because it is more convenient — alas. I am for nothing!

J'ai fini de poser a onze heures du matin. Le portrait est laid et pas ressemblant. Apres nous dejeunons chez Karageorgevitch. Il y a Mlle Mavrocordato et son frere, le prince Soutzo et M. Koechlin, le beau-frere d'Andrieux, prefet de police. On a parle de Gambetta et j'ai declare etre avec le pouvoir parce que c'est plus commode helas. Je ne suis avec rien !

The princess drove us home, and as it is Easter we sit down to table. The table must remain set for three days according to the Russian custom — we content ourselves with one day. Madame Gavini arrived with her husband, Filippini, and Multedo, who had already come yesterday. We sit down to table again. The charming Adeline had wanted to bring Vicomtesse Pernety and Madame Randouin, but they did not dare: "You will tell them on Tuesday, Marie, at the horse show, that you would have been delighted to see them — won't you? La princesse nous a ramenees, et comme c'est Paques on se met a table. La table doit etre ouverte pendant trois jours selon l'usage russe, nous nous contentons d'un jour. Mme Gavini est arrivee avec son mari, Filippini et Multedo qui est deja venu hier. On se remet a table, la charmante Adeline voulait amener la vicomtesse Pernety et la Randouin mais elles n'ont pas ose : Vous leur direz mardi Marie, au concours hyppique que vous auriez ete enchantee de les voir n'est-ce pas, vous les gronderez ?

— But of course — above all Vicomtesse Pernety; I shall be pleased to see her at our house.

- Mais certainement, surtout la vicomtesse Pernety, je serai aise de la voir chez nous.
