This evening Mme Gavini takes me to the Opéra Comique to hear Mademoiselle Bilbaut-Vauchelet, who is quite a star at this moment.
In the box there are only the Gavinis and Monsieur and Madame Sarlande — Sarlande the deputy who married Mademoiselle Levert a year ago.
I mention Naples and Mme Gavini offers me a recommendation to her cousin the Consul General of France. And then Gavini gives me the idea of asking Gambetta for a permanent pass to the Chamber. I am reborn, and am delighted to go have an ice at Tortoni's after the show. And once home I open up entirely and think of a thousand fine things while composing the letter to Monsieur le Président.
Every time that, cast down and no longer able to bear it, I have called upon God, He has, by some great or small consolation, bound me back to life.
Those good Corsicans from the other evening talk of nothing but the two stylish women, and Paul invents fantastic stories for them.
