The successes won at the École des Beaux-Arts competitions by Julian's students have placed his atelier on an excellent footing. There are more students than can be accommodated. Each imagines obtaining a Prix de Rome, or at the very least competing at the École.

Les succès obtenus aux concours de l'Ecole des Beaux Arts par les élèves de chez Julian, ont posé son atelier sur un pied excellent. Il y a plus d'élèves qu'il n'en faut. Chacun s'imagine obtenir des prix de Rome ou tout au moins concourir à l'Ecole.

The women's atelier shares in this lustre, and Robert-Fleury rivals Lefebvre and Boulanger.¹ At every occasion Julian says: "What would they say downstairs?" or "I should like to show this to the gentlemen below."

L'atelier des femmes participe de cet éclat et Robert-Fleury rivalise avec Lefebvre et Boulanger. A chaque chose Julian dit: que dirait-on en bas ? ou: je voudrais montrer cela aux messieurs d'en bas.

I have long been sighing for the honour of seeing one of my drawings sent down. For drawings are only sent down to boast before them and to enrage them — since they say that women are not serious. I have been thinking about the honour of going downstairs for some time; well, today Julian came in and, having examined my academic study, he spoke thus:

Je soupire bien après l'honneur de voir un de mes dessins descendu. C'est qu'on ne leur descend des dessins que pour se vanter et pour les faire rager parce qu'ils disent que les femmes ce n'est pas sérieux. Il y a déjà quelque temps que je pense à l'honneur de descendre, eh bien aujourd'hui Julian est entré et ayant examiné mon académie *il parla ainsi.*

"Finish this well for me and I shall send it downstairs."

- Finissez-moi ça bien et je le descendrai *en bas.*

I am happier for it than I was at the birth of Pincia's puppies. Yesterday we went to Félix, who makes the most distinguished hats in the world and the most adorable dresses.

J'en suis plus heureuse que de la naissance des petits de Pincia. Hier nous avons été chez Felix qui fait les chapeaux les plus distingués du monde et des robes adorables.

Thanks to my painting I have lost all my chic and look like absolutely nothing.

Grâce à ma peinture j'ai perdu tout mon chic et n'ai absolument plus l'air de rien.

We shall remedy this. Laferrière is to fall from favour, and Félix and Doucet¹ will make me the most ravishing things of the best taste.

Nous allons rarranger ça. Laferrière va être en disgrâce et Felix et Doucet me feront les choses les plus ravissantes et du meilleur goût.
