In the afternoon I went through the Exposition with Schaeppi.

L'après-midi j'ai parcouru l'exposition avec Schaeppi.

What more to say of the French Republic — that it is not a government of order and economy! They have strewn the paths with horribly sharp stones; foreigners arrive in their best attire and deal with them on their feet; the paths will be paved for nothing, feet bruised and shoes torn — you can see from here the economy in paving and the profit to the arts, the chiropodists, and the cobblers' trade. We visited the Beaux-Arts section, or at least what was open. It is truly ridiculous to open an exposition when nothing is yet finished.
