We were supposed to go to Carolus-Duran's with young Zurlo, but I was delayed because of the studio and Marcuard, who was just about to enter when I was coming out.

# Mercredi 28 novembre 1877 Nous devions aller chez Carolus-Duran avec le jeune Zurlo mais j'ai retardé à cause de l'atelier et de Marcuard qui était sur le point d'y entrer lorsque j'en sortais.

In any case, the captain is always in the drawing room playing cards — that reassures me.

Enfin, le capitaine est toujours au salon et joue aux cartes, cela me rassure.

I went to bring tea to Schaeppi — she was out. Poor girl — she has a kind of listlessness now; she is discouraged and desperate about being ill; people try to distract her, but without a penny it is pitiable.

J'ai été porter du thé à Schaeppi, elle était sortie. Pauvre fille, c'est une espèce de langueur qu'elle a à présent, elle est découragée et désespérée d'être malade; on tâche de la distraire mais comme on n'a pas le sou c'est pitoyable.

Until now Breslau was the most impertinent one in the studio — and I am outdo­ing her... people gather round to listen to us, which amuses me because I do Popaul at the tribune — and because I love Breslau, who is Aramis; Schaeppi — Porthos; Amélie — d'Artagnan. Athos is not I, as you well know, and I should not want to be — it is too solemn for me.

Jusqu'à présent Breslau était la plus impertinente de l'atelier et je la bats... on se rassemble pour nous écouter et cela m'amuse parce que je fais Popaul à la tribune et parce que j'aime Breslau qui est Aramis; Schaeppi - Porthos; Amélie d'Artagnan. Athos ce n'est pas moi vous le savez bien, et je n'aimerais pas l'être, c'est trop grave pour moi.
