We are returning from the Cascade — my aunt, Dina, and the American alighted from the carriage; I had stayed with Maman. The ethereal Miss Hall, who had supped last night on three slices of galantine, half a bottle of white wine, and two glasses of beer, ate this evening only two pounds of meat and drank only three glasses of punch. And on the way home, as it was dark in the Bois and there were few carriages, she smoked with my aunt and whistled with me.
