If Johnstone did not come to visit me, I have lost nothing — for I have had one of the most extraordinary, most significant, and most brilliant of dreams. A dream of the sort that Joseph used to have.

Si Johnstone n'est pas venu me visiter je n'ai rien perdu car j'ai fait un des rêves les plus extraordinaires et les plus significatifs et les plus brillants. Un rêve dans le genre de ceux que faisait Joseph.

I saw a magnificent deep-blue sky thickly set with great bright stars. I was gazing particularly at one star when suddenly it falls into the sea, reminding me at once that one must make a wish while the shooting stars are flying. I said: To be Duchess of Hamilton. Then another rolls into the sea in the same way and I say again: to be Duchess of Hamilton — then a third, and a fourth. One after another — I had no time to breathe, only to say four times: to be Duchess of Hamilton.

Je voyais un magnifique ciel bleu foncé tout parsemé d'étoiles grandes et brillantes. Je regardais particulièrement une étoile et tout à coup elle tombe dans la mer, me rappelant à l'instant qu'il faut former un vœu pendant que filent les étoiles. j'ai dit: Etre duchesse de Hamilton. - Puis une autre roule dans la mer de la même façon et je dis de nouveau être duchesse de Hamilton, puis une troisième et une quatrième. Mais l'une après l'autre, je n'eus pas le temps de respirer mais seulement de dire quatre fois être duchesse de Hamilton.

Then I began to gaze at a star very low on the horizon, almost in the sea, which at every moment was covered by a cloud; vexed by its obstinacy in not falling, I stretched out my hand and, without the slightest difficulty, I reached the sky and the star. But a strange thing — this part of the sky was made of blue cardboard, and the star was nothing but a scrap of silver paper. With the thumbnail of my right hand I scratched off this silver paper and it fell.

Après je me suis mise à fixer une étoile tout à fait au bas de l'horizon presque dans la mer et qui se couvrait à chaque instant d'un nuage, elle qui me déplaisait par son obstination à ne pas tomber, j'étendis la main et, sans la moindre difficulté, j'atteignais le ciel et l'étoile. Mais chose étrange, cette partie du ciel était du carton bleu et l'étoile n'était qu'un morceau de papier argenté. Avec l'ongle du pouce de la main droite j'ai gratté ce papier argenté et il est tombé.

Then all at once I find myself in our garden, which seems to me [Crossed out: admirable] green and fresh, and before our house — one and a half times taller and finer than in reality. But this I dream of every night.

Puis tout d'un coup je me trouve dans notre jardin qui me paraît [Rayé: admirable] vert et frais, et devant notre maison une fois et demie plus haute et plus belle qu'en réalité. Mais de ceci je rêve toutes les nuits.

It is the stars that give me pause. From morning to evening I do nothing but muse upon them.

Ce sont les étoiles qui me donnent à penser. Depuis le matin jusqu'au soir je ne fais qu'y songer.

I cannot say exactly, but in general this dream foretells great glory and high fortune for me. Do not laugh!

Je ne sais pas exactement, mais en général ce rêve me prédit une grande gloire et une haute fortune. Ne vous moquez pas !

Il faut croire aux rêves, tous les grands hommes ont eu les leurs.

Whatever people say and do, I shall become a celebrated woman — because God made me so.

Quoi qu'on dise et fasse je deviendrai une femme célèbre, parce que Dieu m'a ainsi faite.

Besides, I am convinced of what I say. Such certainty can come only from God. I torment and martyr myself, and yet the conviction of a great and dazzling glory never leaves me.

D'ailleurs je suis convaincue de ce que je dis. Une telle sécurité ne peut venir que de Dieu. Je me martyrise et me tourmente et malgré cela la conviction d'une grandeur et d'une gloire éclatante ne me quittent pas.
