I dreamt that the postman was bringing my letter to the Hôtel de Luxembourg; I lean from the balcony and read the address, then ask him where the Prince is.
J’ai rêvé que le facteur apportait ma lettre à l’hôtel du Luxembourg, je me penche du balcon et lis l’adresse, puis je lui demande où est le prince.
— The Prince of Wales is in Rome.
- Le prince de Galles est à Rome.
— Then what are you going to do with this letter?
- Alors qu’allez-vous faire de cette lettre ?
— It will be forwarded to Rome!
- On l’enverra à Rome !
— And how much longer will the Prince be there?
- Et combien de temps le prince y restera encore ?
— Four days.
- Quatre jours.
— Very well, I said to myself — I shall write to Rome.
- C’est bon me suis-je dit, j’écrirai à Rome.
I believe my letter will not reach him. The Prince is in Paris already. I shall wait a fortnight and write again. I am headstrong.
Je crois que ma lettre ne parviendra pas. Le prince est à Paris déjà. J’attendrai deux semaines et écrirai encore. Je suis entêtée.
It is raining, I am bored and do not go out; to entertain myself I feel like writing another anonymous letter — but not to the Prince of Wales.
Il pleut, je m’ennuie et ne sors pas, pour me distraire j’ai envie d’écrire une autre lettre anonyme, mais pas au prince de Galles.
I stay with Papa until eight o’clock — I hope this will be counted to my credit in heaven.
Je reste jusqu’à huit heures avec papa, j’espère que cela me sera compté au ciel.
