Lies! A day less happy than the others — quite the contrary — for during my ride with Foster and Dina I was constantly troubled by either my black riding habit, or the hat, or the horse. The weather was magnificent — cold and almost clear. Morgan dined with us: an Englishman of eighteen, well-dressed and presentable, but ""of no consequence." My new dog is a pur dog — a purebred.

Notes

In English in the original.
In English in the original — "a purebred dog." Marie uses the English phrase "pur dog" (from pure-bred dog) in a French sentence, reflecting Nice's cosmopolitan expatriate community.
