Ange with her husband, Pelikan with his daughter, and Bihovetz and Daniloff lunch with us at home. I find the lunch was far too good for such simple company — so good as to be quite remarkable. At about three o'clock all the guests were dispatched.

Ange avec son mari, Pelikan avec sa fille, et Bihovetz et la Daniloff déjeunent chez nous, dans la maison. Je trouve que le déjeuner était trop bon pour si simple compagnie, si bon, que c'est merveilleux. Vers trois heures tous les convives furent expédiés.

I was doing my hair when Solominka arrived — cheerful and amiable; one responded in kind. Then came Merjeewsky — I was not very amiable, as I was hurrying Maman to go out; despite this, when we did go out there was no one left.

Je me coiffais quand arriva Solominka, joyeuse et aimable, on le fut pour elle. Ensuite vint Merjeewsky je ne fus pas bien aimable en pressant maman de sortir, malgré cela quand nous sortîmes il n'y avait plus personne.
