Diary of Marie Bashkirtseff

Lundi, 28 septembre 1874

I rise in a hurry1 extraordinaire; I have a thousand things to do, I have no time, I am as if in a fever of haste. The first thing I do is go to the Jardin d'Acclimatation to ask for two young Newfoundlands. We arrive there — no dogs available, and to console me they promise me some in the spring! It was only eleven o'clock and the air was fresh and pure — that is some compensation. From there to Worth, then I go to ride at the Manege Latry. I have nothing to say about that — it was a first time; one would need to return. At the hotel we are told that Monsieur Tchernichoff had come, Rodionoff too. Tchernichoff left a basket of fine fruit. At Laferriere still nothing; my aunt collects her dresses, I cancel mine, and we leave after having roundly scolded the girl who served us. I run all over Paris; I order my bath linens at the Maison de Blanc. We dine at Renard's; there we find the deacon. We take him home; I give his daughter the grey London hat. Jaxa Bikowsky, that wretched buffoon, comes. The deacon suggests going to Worms; we go, we buy nothing, and that is all.
