Again it rains, and I happily miss my sea bath. Towards four o'clock we go out; I stay with my aunt at the Kursaal. Plobster comes near us. This man had a shirt so dirty I was scandalized. Basilevitch passes and stares at the sight of Moelenar.

Maman does not leave Paul alone for a minute; everywhere he follows her.

In the evening we are all at the Kursaal; they played the Egyptian March, which I love so much because of Baden.

I gazed at the immense sky and the black ocean and thought of the pretty Englishman. I glimpsed him on the pier -- a Duke of Hamilton young and small, a boy of twenty-two. Then among the crowd a face recalled the Duke to me, and I was electrified for the rest of the evening.
