Once in passing I mentioned octopuses, and the Pole asked me if I wanted some:

Une fois en passant j'ai parlé des pieuvres et le Polonais m'a demandé si j'en voulais :

"Yes," I answered, and forgot.

— Oui, ai-je répondu et oublié.

This morning the waiter comes in and brings a large, beautiful shell full of octopuses. They tell us to send up the count, who was waiting below. I was writing; I did not rise, I did not turn my head until I had finished sealing and writing the address. He expected to make an impression; there was none. I am like everyone else: I profit where I can. But to thank him, I gave him several letters to post.

Ce matin le garçon entre et apporte une grande et belle coquille pleine de pieuvres. On dit de faire monter le comte qui attendait en bas. J'écrivais, je ne me suis pas levée, je n'ai pas tourné la tête jusqu'à ce que je n'eus fini de cacheter et d'écrire l'adresse. Il s'attendait à de l'effet ; il n'y en eut point. Je suis comme tout le monde, je profite où je puis, mais pour le remercier je lui ai donné plusieurs lettres à expédier.

This evening we all go to the theatre; they are giving "The Sphinx." With the Tamancheffs we are twelve -- enough to fill one side of the theatre. Opposite are the kind Fosters. Despite bad actors, I saw the play again with pleasure. But even with much indulgence, I found Mme de Schelles detestable, and on top of that, no proper costume. The other, Berthe, is nearly as good as in Paris. This dear Tamancheff family is very kind but often bores me -- like the Anitchkoffs, who are the best friends we have and who bore me all the same.

Ce soir nous allons tous au théâtre, on donne "Le Sphinx". Avec les Tamancheff nous sommes douze. Assez pour remplir un côté du théâtre. Vis-à-vis sont les gentils Foster. Malgré de mauvais acteurs j'ai revu la pièce avec plaisir. Mais même avec beaucoup d'indulgence, je trouvais Mme de Schelles détestable, et avec cela pas de toilette. L'autre, Berthe est presque aussi bien qu'à Paris. Cette bonne famille de Tamancheff est très gentille mais souvent elle m'ennuie. Comme les Anitchkoff, qui sont les meilleurs amis que nous ayons et qui avec cela m'ennuient.

These Tamancheffs always drag one away from the promenades; because of them I have not yet been to the concert. I like pretty little circles; this one is too simple. After the performance we head towards the Cercle des Bains, but halfway there we see the lights are out.

Ces Tamancheff entraînent toujours hors des promenades, à cause d'eux je n'ai pas encore été à la musique. J'aime les bataclans jolis, celui-ci est trop simple. Après la représentation on va vers le cercle des Bains mais on voit les lumières éteintes à mi-chemin.
