I go to meet Maman at the baths. I put on my ecru dress, a muslin fichu with Valenciennes lace, the flower hat, and I find myself adorable, my hair down my back. I am adorable because I am pink, very pink.

At Baas, we find Gericke but do not look at him.

Chez Baas, Gericke nous trouvons mais ne le regardons pas.

I become pale again; the color that had illuminated my face has gone.

Je redeviens pâle, la couleur qui avait illuminé ma figure s'est en allée.

We go to the music, to the children's ball.

Nous allons à la musique, au bal d'enfants.

Monsieur de Jahal has left.

M. de Jahal est parti.

I did not dine; I feel ill. I have a pain in my left breast. The first time this pain seized me was when I was reading about the cancer of Anne of Austria in Nice, but then it was only at moments; since last night this pain does not stop.

Je n'ai pas dîné, je me sens mal. J'ai mal dans la poitrine gauche, la première fois ce mal me prit lorsque je lisais du cancer d'Anne d'Autriche à Nice, mais alors ce n'était [que] par moments, depuis hier soir ce mal ne cesse pas.

If I should die, I shall burn my diary. I would be desolate to die... I shall live as I love or I shall die. One or the other. I am only fifteen. My God!

Si je mourrai, je brûlerai mon journal. Je serais désolée de mourir..., je vivrais comme j'aime ou je mourrai. L'un des deux. Je n'ai que quinze ans. Mon Dieu !

I dress with difficulty -- pink dress, hair hanging down -- for the theater, Les pattes de mouches. Paul, that scamp, gambled and won four hundred francs and took a box for us. I feel so ill at the theater that I undo my bodice (my pain returns) and place myself behind the curtain; we are in a stage box.

Je m'habille avec peine, robe rose, cheveux pendants pour le théâtre "Les pattes de mouches". Paul, ce garnement, a joué et a gagné quatre cents francs et nous prit une loge. Je me trouve si mal au théâtre que je défais mon corsage (mon mal reprend) et me place derrière le rideau, nous sommes dans une avant-scène.

The play is very amusing; there is no one interesting. I thought Monsieur de Biesme was coming; I saw him on horseback with a little girl and then on foot going to the Casino. He passes several times a day through the street where we live, on horseback, on foot, etc., etc.

La pièce est très amusante, il n'y a personne d'intéressant. Je croyais que M. de Biesme venait, je l'ai vu à cheval avec une petite fille et puis à pied allant au Casino. Il passe plusieurs fois par jour par la rue où nous demeurons, à cheval, à pied etc. etc.

Maman torments me with her lamentations and weeps all evening, then sleeps in my room. She believes I am ill, and I am furious about it.

Maman me tourmente avec ses lamentations, et pleure toute la soirée puis dort dans ma chambre. Elle croit que je suis malade et je suis furieuse de cela.

I do not wish to resort to doctors; I shall pray to God.

Je ne veux pas recourir aux médecins, je prierai Dieu.

It is that I write and my pain torments me. It is a dull, slow pain that torments me, that would make me groan if I did not restrain myself, that prevents me from eating, walking, seeing, that mistreats me.

C'est que j'écris et mon mal me tourmente, c'est une douleur sourde et lente qui me tourmente, qui me ferait gémir si je ne me retenais pas, qui m'empêche de manger, de marcher, de voir, qui me maltraite.
