I find "L'amour" by Michelet bland, boring, and dirty. This love would disgust one of love.
I live differently here. In Nice I was the first one up, before even the servants, and here I am the last. I woke when Maman, Dina, and Walitsky had returned, at ten o'clock. I dress and at a quarter to twelve we go out; we go to the Jardin d'Acclimatation. There is wind; the air is fresh. I find the gardens very poor in animals; the dogs are not even complete. There was a puppy, alone in its compartment, and one could very well take it through the bars by lifting it up to the top. It is ravishing -- and still a puppy; I had a great desire to steal it.
Those famous chimpanzees Jacques and Louise are ill and look very unhappy. When we found ourselves again on the Champs-Elysees it was past two o'clock. Passing the Panorama, someone proposed going in -- I had seen it again only last August -- and from there to the Palais de l'Industrie. At the moment we approach, the Black Prince departs in a veritable wheelbarrow, dressed in light colors. As always, I saw only his back.
I blushed. Walitsky did not see; Maman did not see.
-- There is Wittgenstein.
Walitsky -- The devil knows what sort of wheelbarrow that is.
I -- How can you -- an elegant wheelbarrow.
[Crossed out: The Black Prince pleases me]
Wittgenstein is fine [Crossed out: when he is] -- for the more extraordinary and small his carriage, the more majestic he is. This majesty in a wheelbarrow pleases me more than I can say.
There is a painting that held my attention -- it is the Judgment of Paris. It is so badly done; moreover it looks dirty, and the goddesses are like the goddesses at the French Theater in Nice.
Since his affair with Gambetta I should like to see the comte de Sainte-Croix.
I have a fitting at Caroline's, then we go to Smith's, then finally home.
What a lot of errands!
There is a very disagreeable thing: the riding habit from Dusautoy's is impossible; he is a scoundrel, this Dusautoy. The riding habit is at his shop and he wants the money. Four policemen came; to be rid of them one gave them the wretched three hundred francs. Walitsky will see to everything. I do not like dealing with such things.
Let anyone imagine this: that I blush for the Prince Imperial. It is more than stupid.
In the evening I go to the Gaite disguised in black with Walitsky and Paul. I was looked at.
