I do not care in the least. Although I am not King Dagobert, I put my petticoat on inside out; I therefore foresaw something disagreeable. But nothing happened, except that I did not order my riding habit -- and that is more serious. I spent an hour and a half at the Bon Marche, the Bon Gout, etc.
Je m’en fiche pas mal. Bien que n’étant point le roi Dagobert, j’ai mis mon jupon à l’envers; je prévoyais donc quelque chose de désagréable. Mais rien n’arriva excepté que je n’ai pas commandé mon amazone, et que ceci est plus grave, je passai une heure et demie au Bon Marché, au Bon Goût etc.
If I were a man and had a wife like Dina or like Maria Dimitrievna2, and she dragged me as the latter drags Stiopa through the Bon Marches and the Petit Saint-Thomases of this world, I should turn her out. And I used to marvel when poor Stiopa grew impatient and complained of all these errands through the department stores.
Si j’étais homme et si j’avais une femme comme Dina ou comme Maria Dimitrievna et qu’elle me menât comme cette dernière mène Stiopa dans des Bon Marché et des Petit Saint-Thomas, je la chasserais. The deacon was very kind; he stayed only ten minutes.

I have nothing more to read and am going to bed. I have written three letters -- one to Hélène, one to Jeanne, and one to my aunt to ask her to send my saddle.
Je n’ai plus rien à lire et je vais me coucher. J’ai écrit trois lettres, une à Hélène, une à Jeanne et une à ma tante pour la prier d’envoyer ma selle.
We have taken a piano today; I have already practised two hours.
Nous avons pris un piano aujourd’hui, j’ai fait déjà deux heures.
