There was a scene about the trip to Geneva; they were irritating me; I was furious, irritated, grieved.

Il y avait une histoire à propos du voyage à Genève; on m'agaçait, j'étais furieuse, irritée, chagrinée.

In the evening at the Howards' (white dress, hair up and simple, good). It was rather amusing; we danced a great deal, and the last quadrille was of wonderful spirit. But the change is visible: the Boutowskys are the gods of the day.

Le soir chez les Howard (robe blanche, cheveux haut et simple, bien). C'était assez amusant, on a dansé beaucoup et bien le dernier quadrille était d'un entrain merveilleux. Mais le changement est visible, les Boutowsky sont les dieux du jour.

Helene had the stupidity to say that I do as I please. At this I scolded her seriously and harshly; then I gave her some advice and told her nearly everything I had to say. She understood, but what does it matter. I was for the most part with Nadia and the Mademoiselles Bosslovleff. Helene, Lise, etc. had the tactlessness to tell Nadia that one of her cheeks is bigger than the other. Helene and Lise were dressed like ragpickers. We are beginning to get on better with the Boutowskys; Mary-Helen especially shows me friendliness. The supper was excellent. It was very droll when Patton waltzed with Mme Boutowsky, then M. Boutowsky with his daughters. M. and Mme Boutowsky act like lovers.

Hélène eut la bêtise de dire que je fais ce que je veux. Sur cela je l'ai sérieusement et rudement réprimandée, puis je lui donnai quelqus conseils et je lui dis presque tout ce que j'avais à dire. Elle a compris, mais qu'importe. J'étais la plupart du temps avec Nadia et les demoiselles Bosslovleff. Hélène, Lise, etc. eurent l'indélicatesse de dire à Nadia qu'une de ses joues est plus forte que l'autre. Hélène et Lise étaient vêtues comme des chiffonnières. Nous commençons à être mieux avec les Boutowsky, Mary-Helen surtout me fait des amitiés. Le souper était excellent. C'était très drôle lorsque Patton a valsé avec Mme Boutowsky, puis M. Boutowsky avec ses filles. M. et Mme Boutowsky font les amoureux.

It is today, Tuesday, that I write for yesterday, Monday. I have forgotten much and I am in a hurry.

C'est aujourd'hui mardi que j'écris pour hier, lundi. J'ai oublié beaucoup et je me presse.

I went to bed at half past three in the morning. The whole evening was very agreeable.

Je me suis couchée à trois heures et demie du matin. Toute la soirée était très agréable.

I was forgetting to say that they made me sing -- in a dark room; I do not sing otherwise. M. and Mme Filimonoff wished to hear too, for the first time there were only the Howards, the Bosslovleffs, and Nadia. They were satisfied, and I did not sing well; I was horribly afraid.

J'oubliais de dire qu'on m'a fait chanter; dans une chambre sombre, je ne chante pas autrement, M. et Mme Filimonoff voulurent aussi entendre car la première fois il n'y avait que les Howard, les Bosslovleff et Nadia. On a été satisfait et je n'ai pas bien chanté, j'avais horriblement peur.
