To church. I go out alone into town -- I correct myself, in the company of Prater, who very gravely occupied the seat of honour beside me. A disagreeable wind and dust.
A l’église. Je vais seule en ville, je me trompe, en compagnie de Prater qui, très gravement, occupait la place d’honneur à côté de moi. Un vent et une poussière désagréables.
Maman pays a few calls; at Mme Allen’s I go upstairs with her. Maman, Mme Allen and Mme Howard, whom we found there, on one side, and Mr Allen, young Allen, Tebbitt and I on the other.
Maman fait quelques visites, chez Mme Allen je monte avec elle. Maman, Mme Allen et Mme Howard que nous y avons trouvée d’un côté, et M. Allen, le jeune Allen, Tebbitt et moi de l’autre.
It has been an age since we stopped at the concert; today we merely pass by.
Il y a un siècle que nous ne nous sommes arrêtées près de la musique, aujourd’hui nous passons seulement.
The newlyweds paid their wedding call at two o’clock and we were at home.
Les nouveaux mariés ont fait leur visite de noces à deux heures et nous étions à la maison.
We go to London House -- Maman, my aunt, Dina and I -- from there to the Comtesse de Mouzay’s, who is gravely ill. There we see Mme Balagny, who, when my figure was being discussed, asked me why I push up my bust so much; so I went into a room and showed her that I am simply built that way. She was astonished but consoled me by saying it will pass with age. Fool -- she has, I believe, a purse with a five-kopeck coin in it1.
Nous allons au London House, maman, ma tante, Dina et moi, de là chez la comtesse de Mouzay qui est fort malade. Là nous voyons Mme Balagny, qui lorsqu’on parlait de ma taille me dit, pourquoi je remonte tellement la gorge; alors je suis allée dans une chambre et je lui ai fait voir que je suis faite comme ça. Elle s’étonna mais me consola en disant que ça passera avec l’âge. Bête, elle a je crois un porte-monnaie avec une pièce de cinq kopecks.
At eight o’clock, to the Masséna sale, which continues again this evening, as does the tombola. The ladies are wearing the same dresses, since they are matched to the pavilion. I took a quantity of tickets and won a quantity of small things. I was a little vexed to see a nasty Le Bec up on the grandstand while I was in the crowd.
A huit heures à la vente Masséna qui est continuée encore ce soir, la tombola aussi. Ces dames ont les mêmes toilettes puisqu’elles sont assorties au pavillon. J’ai pris une quantité de billets et gagné une quantité de petites choses. J’étais un peu fâchée de voir un vilain Bec sur la tribune et d’être moi dans la foule.

prince Tchetvertinski2, who is exactly like Chilovski3 -- the same manner of speaking. Woerman was with us nearly the whole time, close to me. He is so stupid that he does not even understand the nonsenses4 of society; after half an hour I found him tiresome and spoke as stupidly as he did, so that we understood each other.

Maman says he always comes towards me, to excite the jealousy of Le Bec. He nearly made me blush on account of Tchetvertinski. What a long name -- I shall simply call him the prince.
Maman dit qu’il vient toujours vers moi, pour exciter la jalousie du Bec. Il m’a presque fait rougir pour Tchetvertinski. Quel nom long, je vais simplement le nommer, le prince.
The garden is lit as bright as day5, then with Bengal lights, and with electric light. One would have thought oneself far from Nice; I fancied I was in Baden. Several bands playing. One could not believe one was in Nice; one felt transported elsewhere, far away, to the Vienna Exhibition or to Baden. I breathed freely.
Le jardin est éclairé a giorno, puis par des feux de Bengale, et par de la lumière électrique. On se croyait loin de Nice, je pensais que j’étais à Bade. Plusieurs musiques. On ne pouvait pas croire qu’on était à Nice, on se croyait transporté ailleurs, loin, à l’exposition de Vienne ou à Bade. Je respirais librement.
I was looking for Lambertye; I am accustomed to him and it seems incredible not to see him. He has become a necessary accessory of all my outings, and I grow bored if I do not see him for a long time. This evening he was not there, but I quickly forgot him.
Je cherchais Lambertye, j’y suis habituée et ce me semble incroyable de ne pas le voir; il est devenu un accessoire nécessaire de toutes mes sorties et je m’ennuie si je ne le vois pas pour longtemps. Ce soir il n’y était pas, mais je l’ai vite oublié.
I was vexed, however, but for more serious reasons -- for our life.
J’étais fâchée cependant mais pour des causes plus sérieuses, pour notre vie.
The baron waylaid us near a kiosk; we absolutely had to take something. My aunt refused, so he sent for champagne, and when she tried to pay he paid for it himself -- a hundred francs. He does nothing but tell how much he has spent. What a paltry little nobody!
Le baron nous attaqua près d’un kiosque, il fallait absolument prendre quelque chose. Ma tante refusait, alors il fit venir du champagne et lorsqu’elle voulut payer il le paya lui-même cent francs. Il ne fait que raconter combien il a dépensé, quel petit être de rien !
Maman has a passion for ragamuffins6; she went about with Mme Anitchkoff, the nurse and the dirty children. Le Bec sent me very amiable smiles. To what do I owe this happiness? Dina says she even bowed to me as she went out.
Maman a la passion des loqueteux, elle allait avec Mme Anitchkoff, la bonne et les sales enfants. Le Bec m’envoya des sourires très aimables. A quoi dois-je ce bonheur ? Dîna dit qu’il m’a même saluée en sortant.
