I went with Maman and Dina to the baths (Macarani). Pitou bathed admirably — he dived four times. It is a true marvel!

Je suis allee avec maman et Dina aux bains (Macarani). Pitou s'est admirablement baigne, il a plonge quatre fois. C'est une vraie merveille !

Today Mme de Mouzay and her daughter left Nice; we were at the station. There were also M. and Mme de Ballore, Mme Teplakoff, M. and Mme Anitchkoff, and several others. The two Mrs Howards were going to Monaco; there they told us that Marie Sapogenikoff is getting married. I was petrified! Marie Sapogenikoff getting married — it is not possible! A month ago she was wearing short dresses! And she only comes up to my elbow — oh! I imagine her dressed as a lady, what a caricature!!!! She is still a child, quite young! It is true that even a tiny puppy ends up becoming a dog. All the same, it is incredible; I would sooner have believed they had put her in school than married her off. It is the school of marriage, but too early. And Cima? What has become of him? I would sooner have thought they would marry her to Cima. Oh! but no, it is incredible!

Aujourd'hui Mme de Mouzay et sa fille ont quitte Nice, nous etions a la gare. Il y avait aussi M. et Mme de Ballore, Mme Teplakoff, M. et Mme Anitchkoff et encore quelques personnes. Les deux madames Howard allaient a Monaco, la elles nous ont dit que Marie Sapogenikoff se marie. J'etais petrifiee ! Marie Sapogenikoff se marie, ca n'est pas possible, il y a un mois elle portait des robes courtes ! Et puis elle me vient jusqu'au coude, oh ! je m'imagine elle habillee en dame, quelle caricature !!!! Elle est encore une enfant, toute jeune ! C'est vrai que *un tout petit chiot finit toujours par devenir un chien*. Tout de meme, c'est incroyable, j'aurais plutot cru qu'on l'a mise a l'ecole que de la marier. C'est l'ecole du mariage, mais trop tot. Et Cima ? qu'est-ce qu'il est devenu ? J'aurais plutot pense qu'on la marierait a Cima. Oh ! mais non, c'est incroyable !

Very fortunately, the thing of yesterday is forgotten — or at any rate, Maman does not speak of it, and nobody does.

Bien heureusement la *chose* d'hier est oubliee, sinon alors maman n'en parle pas et personne.

I am very pleased.
