Today for the first time I rise at half past five in the new house. I worked well; I am pleased with myself. How happy one is when satisfied with oneself — nothing else matters then! One finds everything good and one is happy. And when I think that my happiness depends on me — I have only to study well, that is to say, to do what I must. A secret voice tells me what I must do; I always listen to it once or twice. Yet I have silenced it. How much that cost me! But I shall never do so again. One has only to let oneself go, and one is lost. God keep me!
Again today I took a sea bath. There was a great many people — all the fashionable world of Nice. I wet my hair for this great occasion. There is nothing to say but that I was the heroine among the swimmers. The Durands were there; I presented Paul.
We had company for dinner — M. Orginko, Princess Galitzine, Mme Anitchkoff, and someone else I cannot remember (white dress). Everyone is so kind to me; I am so pleased, happy to please — especially the women.
After dinner came Daniloff, Khalkionoff, Mme Teplakoff with her children. We stayed the whole evening in the garden — it is so pleasant here; we are never alone.
Dina and I went out for a few minutes in the carriage. I wanted to see our dear old dwelling, when a cab passes — a lady with a little girl. Dina cries out:
— There's Gioia! I assure you!
We turned, both of us wanting to see her — it has been so long since I have seen anyone that I should be very glad to see her. But our dear Dominique drives us at a snail's pace; we could not catch up. Has she thrown him over? I understand nothing of it. She has no doubt found a great number of richer admirers in Russia. She was a novelty there. And the Duke of Hamilton — poor creature! I pity him. He will go dragging himself to her door like Simonoff, in the last rank. She will perhaps deign to grant him her friendship. She ought to be generous! I envy her because he loves her, and I envy also her beauty — or rather, her knack for being fashionable and pleasing! I was thinking... I wanted to say something... I wanted to say what pleases me and why such or such a person pleases me. I have found that everything I think beautiful, everything that is beautiful, must resemble him. In short, I am foolish, but I always come back to him. He pleases me so much that I can imagine nothing better. Everywhere I search for resemblances; I find none. He is unique.
