In the morning, to church (black dress) — I confessed. The priest told me that I like to draw attention to myself, that I am vain, etc. etc. etc. Then home, then all sorts of errands in town.
In the evening at eleven, to midnight mass (the new white dress, extremely pretty; hair styled by Allard in the manner of Countess de Galve, very good; but my face not very good).
The Skariatines looked at me a great deal.
Ah! in town I saw Carlos Hamilton, but when he had already passed us, Walitsky said to me:
— Well then! Why don't you jump out of the carriage?
Then I stammered something along the lines of:
— Oh! not now, no... and I blushed, saying:
— You see, I was trying to behave myself, and you go and make trouble.
Dina said:
— She even blushes over it.
[In the margin: I had darkened my eyebrows and it showed. It was dreadful.]
Fortunately my blushing was not misinterpreted by them, and they took it simply — they took it as when I was pleased to see M. Mawley, Mme Paskevitch, etc., merely because I had seen them elsewhere.
Let us return to the mass — an enormous crowd, many foreigners. Mlle Collignon was with us; she behaved well.
Mlle de Galve entered with an Englishwoman and a very tall Englishman with a stupid air. She was horribly badly coiffed, in a blue silk dress; today she was neither graceful, nor elegant, nor pretty, nor anything at all — she did not know where to put herself and was not sure of herself. It is natural: entering a foreign church without any Russian acquaintance is very awkward.
It is only in church that I can picture his face — it is strange; in church I picture him fairly well, and every time his face appears to me, my heart tightens — as they say in Russian; I cannot find a word that expresses it so well in French.
I believe we are not going to Russia; I am glad of it on one hand, for there will be more chance of meeting him.
What a position mine is!
I love a shadow after which it is impossible for me to run. He does not know me; he will never imagine that I could love him — and yet I would have spent all my time anticipating his wishes, making him happy! But God sees that I love him sincerely. He knows how much I desire him.
Oh! my God, do not abandon me! I beseech You to help me become his wife. I adore him. I love so much for the first time! Make me happy! Oh! my God, watch over him, protect him from all possible misfortunes, preserve him!
It is four o'clock when I go to bed.
