Knowing the manner in which Pierre Borel conceived of the duties of a text editor, we had at first hesitated to publish this document. We resolved to include it after verifying that the events Marie says she witnessed did take place on the dates indicated.

The Howards had come to fetch me, but that scoundrel Mouton did not send me the horse. I drove around several times in the carriage, following the horses; I was in my riding habit, then I changed my dress at the promenade — a delightful blue gown.
This evening, at the Opera, Un ballo in maschera. A great many people, but I am sad.
