Overview

A family of Nice «parvenus» (Marie's word), acquaintances of the Howards: Kernberger (2013), in her glossary, has «Seignettes: acquaintances of the Howards in Nice». The Mon Journal t.1 index has «Seignette (famille), 190», t.5 «Seignette (la), 73». «Les deux Seignettes» are two members of the family; first names are not given.

Relevance to Marie

  • 18 June 1873: among those who come to the Nice station to see the Howards off: «les Seignette, les Friedlander, les Ginew, le consul américain M. Voie. (Nous connaissons toutes ces personnes)» (006.0018).
  • 19 November 1874: a painful slight: «les deux Seignettes, ces espèces de parvenus, passaient, maman les a rencontrés souvent chez Mme Howard», and when her mother smiled to greet them they stared straight ahead; her mother, afraid of Marie's reaction, pretended to look at the shop windows (026.0009). The scene shows how the family felt its isolation in Nice society.
  • 18 May 1875: «tous les gens de Nice y sont, Saëtone, Danis, Pépino, les Seignette, les Durand etc.» (033.0028).
