References in Diary
Marie knows the family at Jouy-en-Josas in the autumn of 1883 and is unsparing about the boy. On 2 September 1883 «Marcel file à Paris sans permission. C'est un futur marquis de Tarente, il lui ressemble, ne veut rien faire et n'écoute pas plus cette pauvre maréchale que comme si elle chantait» (101.0306); she adds that she and Claire should have been boys, «Paul et Marcel filles». He sings while she paints Louis's portrait (101.0317, 7 September). On 11 September she writes that he leaves on the 14th for Nancy, «Que Dieu l'emmène. Ce sera la calamité de la famille» (101.0328), and calls him «un garçon aussi grossier avec sa mère, aussi bête, aussi tapageur, aussi insolent. Quand il n'estropie pas un chien, il fait saigner son frère» (101.0329). On New Year's Eve 1883 he is one of the family circle at the Opéra-Comique and at midnight (102.0618). In August 1884 she still mentions «l'air abruti de Marcel» (105.0435).
