Overview

On 30 July 1875 Marie made a caricature of Smirnoff, a gentleman of the Nice Russian circle, and showed it on 22 September 1875 to visitors who insisted on seeing it. Nothing describes the picture; the diary says only that its subject was "cette bonne créature, naïve et assez bête". No image or later record is known.

Marie and this work

So it was painted on canvas, and was kept in her study upstairs (the visitors climb a dusty staircase with candles, 044.0057-0058). The visitors' reaction is not recorded in the passage the inventory cites.

The smaller Smirnoff entry in the glossary records only that he was a Russian in the Sapogenikoff circle at Nice, once brought from Monte Carlo without a hat (June 1875). Whether the caricature was made from life or from memory, and whether it was included in the 'caricatures à l'huile' that Marie brought down on 10 September (043.0021), is not stated.
