Overview
The White Rose is a novel in three volumes (1868) by George John Whyte-Melville (1821–1878), the Scottish novelist best known for fiction about field sports (Wikipedia EN, "George Whyte-Melville"). Digitised copies of the 1868 three-volume edition are on the Internet Archive. The plot is not summarised here because the book was not read for this entry.
Marie and this work
13 March 1876 (055.0682): returning home she finds a book left with Plowden's card, "un roman de Whyte Melville je crois, ayant pour titre 'The white rose'", bound in white parchment with her monogram in gold. So the volume is a personal gift, not a book she chose.
15 March 1876 (055.0718): "Je vais lire 'White rose', il est plus d'une heure." 20 March 1876 (055.0948): at a quarter past ten, ready for bed, she has read some of it and will read a few minutes more. She does not pass judgment on the book in these three paragraphs.
Identification note
The title is in English in the diary; Marie is unsure of the author ("je crois"), but the title and the Whyte-Melville attribution match the 1868 novel. Not to be confused with other books of that name.
