Identity (1876–1878): uncle Nicolas Babanine

Nicolas Stépanovitch Babanine, the youngest of Marie's maternal uncles. The Mon Journal t.9 index has «Babanine (Nicolas Stépanovitch), oncle de Marie Bashkirtseff». Marie: «Mon oncle Nicolas, le cadet des fils de grand-papa» (054/1876-02-14); in Kharkov, 12 September 1876, «mon oncle Nicolas, le cadet de la famille, qui fait semblant d'étudier la médecine. Le pauvre diable m'a jadis aidée à jouer à la poupée» (066.0180). Her father snubs him as one of the Babanines (066.0182, 066.0186); he comes to the station to see her off on 14 September (066.0214) and had pointed her out to the doctor who once treated her grandmother (066.0234). In August 1878 he stays with the family: «mon oncle Nicolas est ici depuis trois semaines ou plus. Il est très laid et c'est un nihiliste» (082/1878-08-20).
